Fergs Kayaks is looking for energetic and experienced kayak and climbing instructors to join our team for the upcoming 2017/2018 summer season. 

We have the following positions available and starting in Oct (start of Nov negotiable) and runs until May 1, 2018.  Applications can be emailed to saleswn@fergskayaks.co.nz  with cover letter, CV, current First Aid/CPR certification and relevant logbooks (rock and/or water) or apply in the shop by September 1st.   You must be entitled to work in New Zealand to apply for a position. Preferred traits for all candidates: reliable, punctual, trustworthy, strong work ethic, safety focused, and flexible.    

1)      Flat water kayak instructor/kayak leader (and climbing wall supervisor) Wellington

-Preferred qualification as a NZOIA Kayak leader or equivalent with logbook.

- Strong interpersonal paddling ability and skill.

-Experience in safely leading school age groups on sheltered water kayak activities.

-Personal experience Stand up Paddle boarding with the confidence to act as an assistant paddle board instructor (Desirable).

-Has personal experience in top rope and lead climbing with the knowledge and ability to manage safety in a controlled indoor gym.

2)      Flat water kayak assistant instructors (and climbing wall supervisor) Wellington

-Desire to work toward the NZOIA Kayak leader qualification.

-Strong interpersonal paddling ability/skill and experience to support a lead instructor.

-Personal experience Stand up Paddle boarding with the desire to learn. 

-Has personal experience in top rope and lead climbing with the knowledge and ability to manage safety in a controlled indoor gym.

3)      Sport climbing instructors Wellington

- Preferred NZIOA Abseil leader and Rock leader awards or higher (Sport climbing instructor desirable.)

- Strong personal climbing experience and skills with top rope, lead and bouldering.

- Plan, prepare and instruct positive introductory rock climbing skill (top rope) and abseil experiences.

- Plan, prepare and instruct positive indoor lead climbing workshops.

- Demonstrate effective safety management and supervision of a top rope, lead climbing and boulder gym.

- Experience and ability to manage emergency situations in a controlled environment.

- Has knowledge and experience with safe Kayak and Stand up Paddle board practises.

4)      Sea kayak guides*Wellington

- Instructors with skills and experience to Lead sheltered (and/or open water) Sea Kayak guided tours and instruct basic sea kayak paddling skills, including deep water self-rescues and paddle technique. 

-This person must as a minimum, hold a marine radio operators licence, day skippers certificate and have Sea Kayak Leader level award (or hold the equivalent knowledge and experience in all 3 requirements.)

*Note Sea Kayak guides may either be casual contract for JUST tours, instruction and boat maintenance, or can work on a more regular basis in store as well, covering demand for climbing and general kayak/sup  hire (requirements listed above.)

  

Assistant Operations and Safety Manager: Rock (focused) and assist in all water operations. Wellington

1 years full time Maternity leave cover (with likely potential to stay on in permanent role) is required for an experienced climbing and kayak instructor, with main focus to cover Health and safety Operations for our busy indoor rock climbing and bouldering  gym.

NZIOA Rock 1 w/ Sport endorsed (or equivalent qualification) and 5 years minimum experience in the industry.

Training to commence preferably in September with full takeover of position expected around Oct/Nov.

This role will include, but is not limited to:

-          Day to day management/ implementation of business safety management systems;

-          H&S and rock skill and rescue training for staff: top rope climbing/ lead climbing/bouldering and accident/incident prevention, response, documentation and review ;

-          Conducting the annual review and update of the business safety management systems;

-          Coordinating bookings for school/corporate/private activity hires and instruction

-          Manage staff rostering accordingly-depending on demand.

-          Regular staff meeting facilitation, recording and forward action planning from the meetings review.

-          Duty management of facility operations: front of house, climbing hire, water hire, skate hire etc..

-          Liaising with the offsite managing director, regarding H&S and business progression;

-          Assisting in the management for all of the above, for sea kayaking and stand up paddle board hire and instruction; including throughout the Adventure Activity Regulation auditing processes.

-          Keeping the business up to date with current and relevant H&S policy for operators, within WorkSafe NZ, Adventure Activity Regulations, Artificial Climbing Structure Guidelines, industrial rope access procedures (relevant to our operation), NZOIA standard for good practice, Marine Operator Safety procedures etc.

-          Managing membership database system, rock climbing equipment and maintenance program, and route setting.

-          Have experience in retail and understanding of the retail rock climbing market. 


Operations Manager. Auckland

Role: To manage Fergs Auckland all on water rental and touring operations. There is an expectation that this person will grow the school business with imaginative programs and restore the famous Rangitoto Sunset tour to its former glory.
Background: Fergs has been acquired by a new owner who wishes to raise the professionalism and imagination in its offering of "on water" activities in Auckland.
Fergs is looking for a seasoned operator who has charisma, dependability, independence but works within clear safety parameters. 


Requirements:
- Equivalent NZOIA Sea Kayak Level 2, or Level 1 with minimum 5 years Lead Guide experience
- History of managing a kayak touring operation
- Evidence of working within clear on water safety protocols
- History of managing large school groups
- Familiar with maximizing social media and its content to keep Fergs relevant
- Implement an online booking system to increase efficiency and capture customer data
