Foundation Skills
What to Expect
An introductory level for new paddlers who want to learn the fundamentals of stand up paddleboarding in a safe and supportive environment. Focus is on building confidence on the board, developing basic paddling skills, and understanding essential safety practices.
Conditions
- Calm, sheltered water such as bays, estuaries, lakes, and harbours
- Light winds and minimal current
- Flat water with little to no wave action
- Easy launch and landing locations
Key Competencies
- Safe board handling and equipment setup
- Mounting, kneeling, standing, and maintaining balance
- Basic forward paddling and stopping
- Simple turning techniques
- Safe falling and remounting the board
- Understanding safety equipment and environmental awareness
What to Bring
- Weather-appropriate clothing (quick-dry in summer, warm layers in winter — no denim or cotton)
- Windproof jacket
- Water bottle
- Sunhat, sunglasses (with strap), and sunscreen
- Secure footwear suitable for water activities (optional)

Develop confidence on the board, learn fundamental paddling skills, and build a strong foundation for future SUP adventures.
