Fergs Kayaks has been helping Aucklanders and visitors experience the water for more than 35 years.

Founded by Olympic gold medallist Ian Ferguson, Fergs began with a vision to make kayaking accessible to everyone. From first-time paddlers exploring Auckland Harbour to athletes chasing performance goals, Fergs quickly became one of New Zealand's most recognisable paddlesports brands and a gateway to adventure on the water.

Operating from our iconic waterfront location at Ōkahu Bay on Tamaki Drive, Fergs has introduced generations of people to kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, surf skiing and outdoor exploration. Along the way, we pioneered Auckland's famous Rangitoto Sunset and Night Kayak Tour, an experience that remains one of the city's most memorable outdoor adventures.

While a lot has changed since 1990, the spirit that Ian built continues to guide everything we do today.

A New Chapter for Fergs Kayaks

In 2024, Fergs Kayaks entered a new chapter under the ownership of Ed Hides, an outdoor educator, guide and paddlesports enthusiast with more than 25 years of experience in adventure tourism, outdoor education, water safety and paddlesport instruction.

Having worked throughout New Zealand and the United Kingdom, Ed has spent his career helping people build confidence in the outdoors, develop practical skills and discover a lifelong love of adventure. His vision for Fergs is simple: honour the legacy that Ian Ferguson created while building a modern paddlesports hub that supports everyone from complete beginners through to experienced paddlers.

Today, Fergs remains committed to creating outstanding experiences on the water while helping grow paddlesports participation throughout Auckland and New Zealand.

Our guided kayak tours showcase some of the most spectacular paddling destinations in the Hauraki Gulf.

Whether you're joining our iconic Rangitoto kayak tour, exploring the volcanic landscapes of Motukorea (Browns Island), paddling beneath the cliffs of North Head, or experiencing the city lights on an evening harbour paddle, our aim is to help people see Auckland from a completely different perspective.
