Motukorea / Browns Island Adventure
What to Expect
Rising dramatically from the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, Motukorea (Browns Island) is one of Auckland’s most striking volcanic cones and a hidden gem just minutes from the city. This uninhabited island is rich in history, once home to thriving Māori settlements and later a landmark for early European explorers. Today, its untouched landscapes, sweeping views, and unique geology make it the perfect destination for adventure seekers and history lovers alike. Whether you’re paddling across the harbour, climbing to the crater rim, or exploring the island’s beaches, Motukorea offers an unforgettable glimpse into Auckland’s volcanic past and natural beauty.
Just 15 minutes from downtown Auckland, your journey begins at Fergs Kayaks in Ōrākei, where you’ll meet your guide and enjoy a barista coffee, tea, or hot chocolate from our in-house café before heading out on the water.
Paddle across the sparkling Waitematā Harbour on a 60-minute kayak to Motukorea / Browns Island, one of Auckland’s most striking volcanic cones. Once ashore, a short hike to the summit reveals three ancient pā sites, terraced gardens, and stories of the island’s cultural and geological history. At the crater rim, take in breathtaking 360° views of Auckland’s skyline and the Hauraki Gulf, before relaxing with light refreshments.
On the paddle home, you’ll trace the dramatic cliffs of Gentleman’s Bay, rounding off an unforgettable half-day experience where adventure, history, and nature meet.
