Sea Kayak Touring - Level 1 - Foundation Skills
What to Expect
An introductory level for new paddlers who can confidently enjoy kayaking in calm, sheltered waters with support from others. Focus is on building fundamental paddling, safety, and environmental awareness skills. This is undertaken in a closed cockpit Sea Kayak.
Conditions

Calm, protected flat water: lakes, lagoons, harbours, calm bays

Wind: Beaufort Force 0–2 (0–11 km/h)

Calm to small ripples; easy launches and landings
Key Competencies

Wet exits, capsize recovery, and basic boat control

Forward paddling and stopping over short distances

Basic turning and sweep strokes

Understanding of safety gear, PFDs, and personal equipment

Awareness of weather and map reading basics
What to Bring

Weather-appropriate clothing (quick-dry in summer, warm layers in winter — no denim or cotton)

Windproof jacket

Water and snacks

Sunhat, sunglasses (with strap), and sunscreen
Focus:
Develop safe paddling technique, water confidence, and basic navigation skills in a supportive group environment.
